The Intel Compute Stick (Reisinger, 2015) is currently available on pre-order from NewEgg with a sale date of Friday April 24th 2015. Coincidentally, that’s the same day that the Apple Watch will be delivered (Deer, 2015 April 6) to those customers who pre-ordered it on Friday April 10th 2015.

The Intel Compute Stick comes in two (2) distinct versions:

  • US$150 for the Windows version
  • US$110 for the Linux version

Amazon also has both the Windows and Linux versions of the Intel’s Compute Stick, but as of writing this article, no prices are posted and both versions are sold out.

US$149 Intel’s Compute Stick – Intel finds a use for those spare Intel Atom Processors

Intel’s Compute Stick is the US$149 HDMI Dongle that turns any Flat Screen Digital TV such as the Samsung’s JS8500 Series of Smart UHDTV (Deer, 2015 January 10) or any HDTV with a HDMI port!

Just plug it in the HDMI port and plug in the USB Cable for power and you have a mini computer that’s almost as powerful as the (Deer, 2015, February 3) US$35 Raspberry Pi Model B.

The Intel Compute Stick weighs 53.86 g (1.9 oz) and has dimensions 10.31 x 3.71 x 1.19 cm (4.06 x 1.46 x 0.47 in) and come in running either Windows or Linux.

That OS runs on an Intel Atom Quad-Core Processor supported by 2GB of onboard RAM and 32GB of storage expandable to 128GB via a Micro SD Card slot. Bluetooth 4.0 connectivity is provided wirelessly (Ralph, 2015) connect your mouse and keyboard with 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi to allow you to access the Internet via Wi-Fi.

This is by no means a PC replacement, as these are surplus Intel Atom Processors in a Quad-Core packaging, the same Intel Atoms used in Netbooks (Deer, 2012, October 3) from 2010.

Due to its compact design get hot real fast, which is why Intel added a processor Fan in this rather large Dongle to keep things cool. It’s not as cheap as the Raspberry Pi 2 Model B or even the Google Chromebit (Nieva, 2015), but it’s a full blown computer on the go that makes any screen work workstation.
