US$109 Millennium Falcon and US$117 X-Wing Fighter are Drones for the Christmas

Walt Disney has apparently started promoting the Star Wars: The Force Awakens long before its set to be unleashed upon the public come Friday December 18th 2015. They’ve being doing so by unboxing a lot of cool toys months before the actual movie hits theatres!!

Certainly the US$149 BB-8 Ball Robot made by Robotics startup Orbotics (Deer, 2015, September 3) and unleashed upon the world on Thursday September 3rd 2015 is indeed the droid your children will be looking for under the Christmas tree! But what would a Ball Droid be without air support?

So the following day, Star Wars in partnership with Air Hogs let loose a pair of Drones (Stella, 2015) based on the Millennium Falcon and the X-Wing Fighter. The Millennium Falcon was demonstrated at Fan Expo Canada in Toronto, Canada (Passary, 2015) but the X-Wing Fighter wasn’t due to safety concerns!

Both drones are made of high density foam and can be remote controlled from as far away as 200 meters.

The US$109 Millennium Falcon Drone is really a quadcopter with blades facing downwards and is capable of hovering and forward thrust flight.

The US$117 X-Wing Fighter also has four (4) propellers. But instead of being configured in a quadcopter fashion or even a VTOL (Vertical Takeoff and Landing) like the Aerosense Drone (Deer, 2015, August 25), it’s configured to fly straight like a model airplane with its propellers pointing backwards.

The X-Wing Fighter therefore might need to be powered up and thrown in order to be launched, unless the landing gear is up to the challenge of takeoff from the ground. There is even a mini R2-D2, but it’s not yet confirmed if he makes any beeping sounds, which would certainly make them a true collector’s item.
