Nighthawk X8 Smart WiFi Router kicks off the Router Wars

The race to make the most powerful router has begun.  Asus had announced their Asus RT-AC5300U in September 2015. Not to be outdone, Netgear unveiled their response (Dong, 2015, October 1), the Nighthawk X8 AC5300 Smart WiFi Router (model R8500) on Thursday October 21st 2015.

The Nighthawk X8 AC5300 Smart WiFi Router is a quad-stream tri-band router with two bands, a 5GHz band and a  2.4GHz band. Each of the 5GHz band can deliver up to 2166Mbps and the 2.4GHz band can deliver up to 1000Mbps.

Thus the total Wi-Fi bandwidth at any given time can be as high as 5,300Mbps, or 5.3GBps………………..making this one fast device.

• Get fastest speeds available up to 5.3Gbps
• Tri-band WiFi delivers more WiFi to more devices
• Quad Stream delivers up to four data streams per WiFi band
• 4 active antennas and 4 internal antennas amplify and maximize range
• 6 Gigabit Ethernet ports—aggregate two ports for faster file transfers
• Smart Connect intelligently selects the fastest WiFi band for every device
• MU-MIMO capable for simultaneous streaming of data to multiple devices
• Dynamic QoS prioritizes bandwidth by application and device
• ReadyCLOUD® USB Access — Secure personal access to USB storage from anywhere

The new R8500 is huge, but has a dash of style. The squarish router has a few curvy lumps on its top, making it resemble a piece of noveau art. These lumps also make for better ventilation and prevents you from putting anything on top of the router, something you’re not supposed to do anyway.

One thing that stands out about the R8500 is the fact it has four external active antennas that promise to deliver better range and faster real-world speeds. The trade-off is that these antennas are not detachable, so replacing  them with third-party high-gain antennas, or make the router more compact for easier transportation isn’t possible.

R8500_Connection_Diagram-600x436The Nighthawk X8 AC5300 Smart WiFi Router is available for pre-order now for US$399.99 and will be arriving just in time for Christmas in early October 2015.
